“The writers I most appreciate are those who are moved by an earth force which, in essence, is a reaction towards their surrounding world. Cristina\u2019s power of observation is two times incisive, not just because she writes about misery and human cruelty, but because she penetrates the fear or the dreams of defenseless beings. The scenario is always a border, the possibility of the utopia that will not be realized until it turns into tragedy. The illegal immigrants (what a terrible definition for a human being) are wandering ghosts, a metaphor of an endless agony, being observed by the cactus, like watchers. The world Cristina describes through her stories is also the world of feminine intimacy: women have hopes which are being buried; families are broken when one of its members decides not to be what he will always be. The stories in this book are of one piece, with no fissures, with no useless roundabouts.
